The MMO files: When Warcraft is the starting point
I would love to know other people’s history with MMOs. Was it something they’ve been doing for years? Did they make the transition from pen and paper and Pong to 1991’s Neverwinter Nights? Have they been playing the same game for seven years; contemplating something new, but never quite ready to say goodbye to their chosen land? I’m assuming everyone has a different story.
My husband and I started with MMOs when World of Warcraft came out. It was our first and despite attempting to play several since (albeit each very briefly) we’ve yet to find one we like as much. Final Fantasy XI, Guild Wars, DAOC, City of Heroes… none have compared. We often joke that we spoiled ourselves right off the bat - there is nothing out there that can compete with WoW’s scope or style. Artistically, WoW feels warm and living, we’ve yet to find another that could claim that. Yes, some diehard MMOers may consider it to be a simple “for the masses game,” but maybe that’s not such a bad thing. They are obviously doing something right, 9 million players, several 3+ year veterans…
I know someday there will a game that can pull us away from Azeroth and I think we’d both be ready to move on… we just need to find something worth giving up three plus years work for. In the meantime though, we’ll just keep working on our 6th 70 until WotLK comes out and we have to decide who goes to 80 first.
